We are pleased to share some stories of tenants we have helped by improving their homes to meet their challenging needs.
Sometimes working with the support of Occupational Therapy, CHS often carries out necessary building and gardening works to our properties to allow tenants with disabled family members, to continue to live in their home and local community.
Here are just three recent projects that we have worked on.
A family of 6 in Cambourne needed help as their growing disabled daughter become too big to be carried to the upstairs bathroom and so we built a single story extension with a downstairs bedroom with en-suite. We also block paved the front garden to allow easy access to and from the home.
“I cannot express my thanks enough to everyone involved in helping us. We were worried that we would have to move from our lovely house. That would have been very difficult as our daughter has settled well in a local school and has made friends nearby. To be able to stay here and have the work done has changed our lives. Our daughter is so happy with her new bedroom; she even chose the paint colour for her walls – pink of course!” – Mother
A family of four in Caxton needed help keeping their disabled son safe whilst playing out in the garden. Working with Occupational Therapy, we replaced the fencing with featheredge fence to keep the son and neighbour’s dog apart! Whilst working on the garden we also replaced the bath with a level access shower for ease of access.
“The builders have now finished the bathroom. We just wanted to say that the bathroom is awesome and thank you very much for sorting it out. It is much easier for our son now and he loves to use his ‘splash room” – Father
Parents of a disabled son in Cherry Hinton were finding it hard with their son disturbing the rest of the family when he would frequently wake during the night and could be very loud for long periods of time. We soundproofed the son’s bedroom and fitted a thicker heavy duty bedroom door and removed an internal window, whilst ensuring that he was not completely shut off from the rest of the family. We also supplied a bed unit to support his additional needs.
“The work carried out has worked well for our son and all family members, the noise level coming from his bedroom is now much less than before, having much less of an impact on us all. We are extremely grateful for his work being carried out; it has made a big difference. We rate the CHS adaption works very highly.” – Father
